Why Good Golf Grips Matter – Advice from Foxy, Golf Professional at Stover Golf Club

Foxy, the GOLF professional at Stover Golf Club, always reminds players that your grip is your only connection to the golf club — so it needs to be right. Here’s why checking your grips regularly is so important:

  1. Wear and Tear on a Grip
Over time, golf grips naturally wear down. Smooth, shiny, or cracked grips reduce traction and make it harder to hold the club securely. This can lead to slipping during the swing and inconsistent shots.
  2. Weather Conditions Can Make Grips Poor
Rain, humidity, heat, and even cold weather can affect how your grips perform. Moisture and sweat can make them slippery, while extreme heat can dry them out and cause cracking. Weather exposure speeds up deterioration.
  3. Regular Cleaning is Essential
Grips collect dirt, sunscreen, sweat, and grass residue. If they aren’t cleaned regularly, they lose their tackiness and effectiveness. A simple clean with warm soapy water can restore much of the grip’s original feel and performance.
  4. Correct Grip Size for Your Hand
Using the correct grip size for your hand is crucial. If the grip is too small, you may overuse your hands and wrists. If it’s too large, you may struggle to release the club properly. The right size promotes better control and comfort.
  5. Grip Size Affects Ball Flight
The importance of the correct grip size goes beyond comfort — it can actually influence your shot shape and flight patterns. Grips that are too small may encourage a stronger hand action and potential hooking, while grips that are too large may restrict release and promote a fade or slice.
  6. Reducing Tension in the Swing
Worn or incorrect grips can cause stressed, tense hands. Tension often makes the golf swing feel rushed or overly fast, reducing rhythm and consistency. A comfortable, properly sized grip helps you swing freely and smoothly.

As Foxy says, “If your connection to the club isn’t right, the rest of your swing doesn’t stand a chance.” Make grip checks part of your regular golf maintenance — your scores will thank you!
